DBT Skills Only

13-Week Online DBT Skills Training Group

An affordable, standalone option for those with and without a Borderline Personality Disorder diagnosis. This group is suitable both for individuals accessing the full programme model but also those who relate to the difficulties but do not require the full programme treatment (including those who have not received a personality disorder diagnosis).

What is the DBT Skills Training Group?

The Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) Group is a skills training group. The word ‘dialectical’ means bringing together things that are opposites. For example, therapists accept clients as they are, while also acknowledging that clients need to change to reach their goals.

There are 4 modules: mindfulness, emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness.

Who is the treatment group for?

This group is for people who have a hard time controlling and expressing their emotions effectively.

How do I join the treatment group?

Please email anthony@talkitout.ie.

When and where is the treatment group held?

The skills classes will be conducted online on zoom 7.30-9.30pm Wednesday's from January 24th 2024.  The classes will take place every Wednesday (except for Wednesday 27th March 2024) and  the programme will complete on April 24th 2024.

What is expected of me?

You will be given handouts and homework to do at home. We will review the handouts and homework in each session.

Group members are expected to arrive on time, actively take part, complete homework assignments, and attend every session. If you miss more than 3 sessions, you will not be allowed to continue with the group because you would have missed too much material.

What will I learn?

Mindfulness     2 weeks

The practice of being fully aware and present in the moment

Emotional regulation skills     4 weeks

The practice of learning how to change your emotions

Distress tolerance skills     3 weeks

How to tolerate pain in difficult situations

Interpersonal effectiveness     4 weeks

How to ask for what you want and say no while maintaining self-respect and good relationships with others

Two modules are acceptance-oriented skills (mindfulness and distress tolerance) and two modules are change-oriented skills (emotional regulation and interpersonal effectiveness). Mindfulness is also integrated throughout all of the sessions.

The skills classes will follow the 13 week Soler Adult DBT Skills Training Schedule. It is important to note that you will not receive full, comprehensive DBT treatment by attending this 13 week course. Full DBT treatment consists of weekly individual DBT therapy sessions, weekly DBT skills training group sessions for 24 weeks, 24/7 access to an individual therapist by phone for skills coaching, and your therapist participating  in weekly case consultation. This course will provide a modified version of the skills training component only. A comprehensive DBT programme will not be offered until Autumn 2024.

Although the skills only option would not be as comprehensive as the Standard DBT Programme research has shown that participants in a 13 week DBT skills group had wide ranging mental health improvements.

The weekly cost of the programme is €75.  It is only possible to commit to the full 13 week programme. The total cost of full programme is €975. To secure a place in the skills group a non refundable deposit of €200 must be paid at the time of booking. The remaining part of the fee is due before the official start date of the group. If you have private health insurance, it may cover a portion of the cost. Check your policy for cover details. Weekly receipts can be provided.
